Your 2026 guide to the credit cards Costco accepts

The credit cards Costco accepts in Canada come down to one network rule: Mastercard in the warehouse, Mastercard at the pump, and Mastercard or Visa on Costco.ca. That rule has caught out plenty of shoppers standing at the checkout with a Visa or an Amex in hand. This guide sets out exactly what works at each Costco location type, why the rule exists, how to pay when you only carry the wrong network, and which $0 Mastercard earns the most on a Costco run.

The credit cards Costco accepts in Canada: warehouse, gas and online

Costco Canada accepts Mastercard credit cards in its warehouses and at its gas stations, and accepts both Mastercard and Visa on Costco.ca. No Costco Canada location accepts American Express. Debit cards, Costco Shop Cards and, in the warehouse, cash, personal cheques and Apple Pay round out the list. The table below is Costco Canada’s own published list, checked on September 12, 2026.

Source: Costco Canada customer service, “What methods of payment does Costco Canada accept?”, published September 10, 2025 and checked September 12, 2026. Costco changes its payment partners rarely but without much notice, so confirm at the door if you are relying on a single card.

Where you pay Credit cards Costco accepts Other payment methods accepted Not accepted
Costco warehouse Mastercard only Debit card, cash, Costco Shop Card, personal cheque, Apple Pay Visa, American Express, Discover
Costco gas station Mastercard credit and Mastercard debit Debit card, physical Costco Shop Card Visa, American Express, cash, digital Shop Cards
Costco.ca (online) Mastercard and Visa Most PIN-based debit cards, Costco Shop Card American Express, cash, cheques, Apple Pay
Verdict: if you shop at Costco more than once a month, carry a Mastercard. It is the only credit card that works in all three places, and the CIBC Costco Mastercard, the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card, the RBC Cash Back Mastercard and the MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus all cost $0 a year. A Visa still works on Costco.ca, so an online-only Costco shopper does not need to switch.

Why does Costco Canada take Mastercard only?

The credit cards Costco accepts are Mastercard alone in its warehouses because Costco signs one exclusive credit card network agreement at a time, trading network choice for a lower cost of acceptance on every transaction. The current agreement with Mastercard has run since January 1, 2015, when Costco Canada moved off its long-standing American Express exclusive. Capital One issued the co-branded Costco card from 2015 until CIBC took the program over in early 2022.

The economics explain the stubbornness. Card acceptance fees are one of the largest costs a low-margin warehouse club carries, and a single-network deal lets Costco negotiate a rate no open-acceptance retailer gets. The rule is applied at the terminal: a Visa or Amex tapped at a Costco Canada register is declined before it reaches the issuer, so it is not a matter of asking the cashier. The same logic is why the list of credit cards Costco accepts in the United States is different (Visa only there), which confuses Canadians who read American guides.

What the exclusive does not restrict is the issuer. Any Mastercard from any Canadian bank or credit union works, from a $0 cash back card to a World Elite travel card, and so does a prepaid or debit Mastercard. The choice of the best card for Costco therefore comes down to earn rate on the Mastercard network, which is where the comparison below goes.

Paying at Costco gas stations: Mastercard credit and debit, no cash

At the pump, the credit cards Costco accepts are Mastercard credit cards and Mastercard debit cards, alongside regular debit cards and physical Costco Shop Cards; cash and digital Shop Cards are not accepted. The pumps are pay-at-pump only with no attendant taking money, which is why cash is out, and the digital Shop Card is excluded because the pump reader cannot scan a phone.

Two practical points follow. First, a Costco membership card is checked at the pump before the payment card, so keep both in hand. Second, the credit cards Costco accepts at the pump are exactly the same as in the warehouse, so a Costco household needs one Mastercard for both, not two cards. The CIBC Costco Mastercard pays its highest rate, 3%, on Costco gas specifically, which is the single strongest argument for that card over a general no-fee Mastercard if you fill up there every week.

Paying on Costco.ca: Mastercard and Visa both work online

Online, the credit cards Costco accepts widen to Mastercard and Visa, alongside most PIN-based debit cards and the Costco Shop Card, so the online store is the one place a Visa cardholder can shop Costco directly. American Express is still not accepted online, and neither are cash, cheques or Apple Pay, which only work in the warehouse.

This is the detail that changes the answer for a lot of readers. The credit cards Costco accepts online are broader than in store, and Costco.ca stocks most of the same categories at delivered prices, so a Visa household that only wants the occasional Costco order never has to open a Mastercard. Rewards follow the same logic: the CIBC Costco Mastercard pays 2% on Costco.ca purchases against 1% in the warehouse, so for that card the online store is the better place to spend.

Can you use a Visa or American Express at Costco Canada?

Not at the register or the pump: Visa and American Express are not among the credit cards Costco accepts in its Canadian warehouses or gas stations. Visa works on Costco.ca only, and American Express works nowhere at Costco Canada. If those are the only cards you carry, five workarounds cover almost every situation:

  • Buy a Costco Shop Card on Costco.ca with your Visa. Costco.ca accepts Visa, and a Shop Card is accepted in the warehouse and at the pump (physical card only at the pump). You still earn your Visa’s rewards on the Shop Card purchase, at whatever rate your issuer applies to Costco.ca.
  • Pay with debit. Every Costco Canada warehouse and gas station accepts debit cards. No rewards, but no network problem either.
  • Use Apple Pay in the warehouse. Costco lists Apple Pay as accepted in the warehouse. Costco’s page does not say which networks work through it; the network rule normally follows the card inside the wallet, so treat a Visa in Apple Pay as unconfirmed and a Mastercard or debit card in Apple Pay as safe.
  • Carry cash or a cheque for the warehouse. Neither works at the pump.
  • Add one of the credit cards Costco accepts, a $0 Mastercard, to your wallet. The four cards compared below cost nothing a year, and a second card used only for Costco does no harm to your credit file as long as it is paid in full.

A common question is whether a Visa Debit card counts as debit at Costco. Costco Canada’s list says “Debit Card”, and Canadian bank debit cards run on Interac at a warehouse pin pad, so a normal bank debit card works. The page does not address a card that runs only on the Visa network, so we do not confirm it here.

The CIBC Costco Mastercard: the card built for the credit cards Costco accepts rule

The CIBC Costco Mastercard is a $0 annual fee card that pays 3% cash back at restaurants and on Costco gas, 2% on other gas, EV charging and Costco.ca, and 1% on everything else including purchases inside the Costco warehouse, verified on CIBC’s card page on September 12, 2026. It needs a Costco membership and a $15,000 annual income, it doubles as your Costco membership card, and it is the only one of the credit cards Costco accepts that names Costco in its own rate tiers.

Figures verified on cibc.com on September 12, 2026. CIBC loads its interest rates by script, so the purchase and cash advance rates are not printed here; they sit in the card’s rates table on the application page.

CIBC Costco Mastercard Verified figure
Annual fee $0, primary and authorized users
Restaurants and Costco gas 3% cash back
Other gas, EV charging, Costco.ca 2% cash back
Everything else, including inside the warehouse 1% cash back
Income needed $15,000 a year
Costco membership Required; non-members can sign up during the application
How cash back is paid Once a year as a gift certificate on the January statement, redeemable in the CIBC app or printed from online banking, spendable at Costco
Welcome offer $30 statement credit after a first purchase and eStatement enrolment within 90 days, offer ends September 20, 2026
World Mastercard version Same $0 fee and same rates, needs $50,000 individual or $80,000 household income, adds World Mastercard experiences

Two things in that table matter more than the headline rates. The 1% inside the warehouse is the lowest rate on the card, so the CIBC Costco Mastercard is not a “3% at Costco” card; it is a 3% gas and restaurant card that happens to be your membership card. And the cash back arrives once a year as a certificate, not as a monthly statement credit, so it is a January Costco run rather than money in your account.

Verdict: the CIBC Costco Mastercard is the right pick among the credit cards Costco accepts for a household that fills up at Costco gas and eats out regularly, because 3% on both at $0 is a rate no other no-fee Mastercard matches. If most of your Costco spending is inside the warehouse at 1%, a general no-fee Mastercard with a 2% category you can point at Costco can earn more, subject to the category-code catch below.

Verdict: of the credit cards Costco accepts, the CIBC Costco Mastercard wins for a household whose Costco spending is gas and whose non-Costco spending is restaurants; the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card wins when Costco is one stop among many and you want 2% on the three categories that dominate your month; the RBC Cash Back Mastercard suits someone who wants a big-bank card and spends past $6,000 a year outside groceries; the MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus is the pick for the first six months of a new card and a gas-and-grocery budget under $500 a month.

The credit cards Costco accepts on a $2,000 a month Costco budget

Put the credit cards Costco accepts on the site’s standard $2,000 a month budget, rearranged for a Costco household, and the CIBC Costco Mastercard returns about $342 a year and the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card about $228, with the RBC and MBNA cards behind. The budget used here: $500 of groceries inside the Costco warehouse, $100 of groceries elsewhere, $150 of gas at Costco, $50 of gas elsewhere, $300 of recurring bills, $100 on Costco.ca, $200 at restaurants and $600 on everything else.

  • CIBC Costco Mastercard: about $342 a year. $5 a month on the warehouse groceries at 1%, $1 on other groceries, $4.50 on Costco gas at 3%, $1 on other gas at 2%, $3 on bills, $2 on Costco.ca at 2%, $6 at restaurants at 3% and $6 on the rest, $28.50 a month. Paid as a January certificate.
  • Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card: about $228 a year with groceries, gas and recurring bills as the three 2% categories. The $500 inside the warehouse earns 0.5% ($2.50) unless the purchase codes into a chosen category, other groceries $2, gas $4, bills $6, and the remaining $900 earns 0.5% ($4.50), $19 a month. Add up to $100 from the welcome offer in year one.
  • RBC Cash Back Mastercard: about $222 a year. The $1,200 of non-Costco groceries earns 2% ($24); the other $22,800 earns 0.5% on the first $6,000 ($30) and 1% on the rest ($168). The tiering means the card gets better the more you spend, and the 7% welcome rate on up to $1,000 adds up to $70 in year one.
  • MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus: about $174 a year, or about $219 in year one. Gas and non-Costco groceries total $300 a month at 2% ($6), the other $1,700 earns 0.5% ($8.50). The 5% rate for six months lifts the same $300 to $15 a month while it lasts.

The gap between the two strongest credit cards Costco accepts, the CIBC Costco Mastercard and the Tangerine card, is about $114 a year on this budget, and almost all of it comes from three lines: Costco gas at 3%, restaurants at 3% and the warehouse groceries at 1% rather than 0.5%. Move the gas and restaurants out of the budget and the two cards land within a few dollars of each other, which is the honest way to say that the CIBC Costco Mastercard earns its place on gas and dining, not on the warehouse.

The grocery-rate catch: Costco is a wholesale club, not a grocery store

A warehouse purchase at Costco does not automatically earn a card’s grocery rate, even on the credit cards Costco accepts, because issuers pay category rates by the merchant category code the network assigns, and Costco warehouses are generally coded as a wholesale club rather than a grocery store. That is why the budget above credits the Tangerine, RBC and MBNA cards with only their base rate on the $500 spent inside the warehouse.

Tangerine publishes a merchant category code list for its cards, and the other issuers describe their categories in the cardholder agreement, so check before you choose a 2% category on the strength of your Costco spending. The Triangle Mastercard, verified on September 6, 2026 for our no-fee Mastercard comparison, states the exclusion outright: its 1.5% grocery rate excludes Costco and Walmart. The CIBC Costco Mastercard sidesteps the question by naming Costco in its own rate tiers, which is a real advantage in clarity even where its 1% warehouse rate is not the highest number on the page.

The other credit cards Costco accepts online do not have this problem in the same way: Costco.ca purchases are coded as online retail, and the CIBC Costco Mastercard again names the site in its 2% tier. If a card’s rewards matter to you, the cleanest test is one small warehouse purchase followed by a look at how it posted in your rewards summary.

How we checked

The list of credit cards Costco accepts was taken from Costco Canada’s customer service page on September 12, 2026, not from third-party guides, several of which still repeat the American Visa-only rule. Every card figure on this page was checked against the issuer’s own public card page the same day, the verify-first rule described in how we review. Cards whose pages would not load for verification on the day we checked are not quoted from memory: the Triangle Mastercard’s page returned an error on September 12, so its figures above carry the September 6 date from our earlier comparison, and it is not ranked here.

FAQ

Credit cards Costco accepts, answered

The questions Canadians ask most.

What credit cards does Costco accept in Canada?

Mastercard only in the warehouse and at the gas station, and Mastercard or Visa on Costco.ca, per Costco Canada’s payment page checked September 12, 2026. American Express is not accepted anywhere at Costco Canada. Debit cards and Costco Shop Cards work at all three, and the warehouse also takes cash, personal cheques and Apple Pay.

Does Costco Canada take Visa?

Only online: among the credit cards Costco accepts, Visa appears on Costco.ca alone. Costco.ca accepts Visa, but Costco Canada warehouses and gas stations do not. The workaround is to buy a Costco Shop Card on Costco.ca with your Visa and spend the Shop Card in the warehouse or at the pump (physical card only at the pump).

Does Costco take American Express in Canada?

No, and it is the biggest gap in the credit cards Costco accepts. American Express was Costco Canada’s exclusive network until the end of 2014 and has not been accepted in the warehouse, at the pump or on Costco.ca since the move to Mastercard on January 1, 2015. Amex cardholders pay with debit, a Shop Card, cash in the warehouse, or a $0 Mastercard.

Which credit cards does Costco gas accept?

The credit cards Costco accepts at the pump are Mastercard credit cards and Mastercard debit cards, plus regular debit cards and physical Costco Shop Cards. Cash and digital Shop Cards are not accepted at the pump. The CIBC Costco Mastercard pays 3% on Costco gas, its highest rate.

Can I buy a Costco Shop Card with a Visa?

Yes, on Costco.ca, which accepts Visa and Mastercard. The Shop Card is then accepted in every Costco Canada warehouse and, as a physical card, at the gas pumps. Your Visa earns whatever rate your issuer applies to Costco.ca on the purchase.

Is the CIBC Costco Mastercard worth getting?

Yes for a household that buys gas at Costco and eats out, because 3% on both at a $0 annual fee is unmatched among the credit cards Costco accepts. It earns only 1% inside the warehouse, needs a $15,000 income and a Costco membership, and pays cash back once a year as a January certificate, so a light Costco shopper may do as well with a general 2% card.

Which no-fee Mastercard is best for Costco?

The CIBC Costco Mastercard when Costco gas and restaurants are regular lines in your budget (about $342 a year on our $2,000 Costco budget); the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card when Costco is one stop among many and you want 2% on three categories of your choice (about $228). Both were verified September 12, 2026, and both cost $0 a year.

Does a Costco warehouse purchase earn a card’s grocery rate?

Usually not, because Costco warehouses are generally coded as a wholesale club rather than a grocery store, and issuers pay category rates by that code. The Triangle Mastercard excludes Costco from its grocery rate by name. The CIBC Costco Mastercard names Costco in its own tiers, which removes the guesswork.
